ECAJ statement on Operation Lion’s Roar.

While regret­ting the necessity for military action and the risks it poses to the people of Israel and Iran and the armed forces involved, ECAJ non­ethe­less welcomes the US and Israeli strikes against the Iranian regime, and the support for the strikes expressed by the Aus­trali­an Gov­ern­ment

Military action was ulti­mately rendered unavoid­able and inev­it­able. The Iranian regime has been found by the IAEA to have enriched uranium to 60% purity. There is no peaceful or civilian purpose that requires uranium to be enriched to such a high level. The only purpose it can serve is to establish a platform from which rapid further enrich­ment to weapons grade purity can be achieved.

This, combined with the devel­op­ment of long-range ballistic missiles, con­sti­tutes an intol­er­able ongoing threat to inter­na­tion­al peace and security from a regime that for too long has ter­ror­ised not only its own people but also the inter­na­tion­al community, orches­trat­ing and spon­sor­ing deadly attacks on Jewish – and other – targets around the world.

Hellbent on the destruc­tion of Israel, their proxies – Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis – pose an exist­en­tial threat to the Jewish State and continue to endanger the stability of the entire Middle East.

The threat extends to all parts of the world, including Australia, where the Islamic Revolu­tion­ary Guard Corps has been behind the arson attacks on Mel­bourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue and Lewis’ Con­tin­ent­al Kitchen in Sydney in late 2024.

In recent months, meanwhile, it has slaughtered thousands of its own civilians who have taken to the streets calling for basic human rights.

As ECAJ President Daniel Aghion noted, “The Iranian Gov­ern­ment is a murderous regime. It has attacked syn­agogues and Jewish targets in Australia and around the world. It funds terrorist groups Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis. It massacres its own civilians.”

He added, “Western nations, led by Israel and the US, must curtail the nuclear aspir­a­tions of the Iranian Gov­ern­ment, disrupt its inter­na­tion­al terrorism network, and protect the Iranian people from their own lead­er­ship.”

At this time, our thoughts are with the people of Israel and Iran.

May the threat to the former and the oppres­sion of the latter finally be van­quished by Operation Lion’s Roar.
