Interview: ECAJ discusses the Holocaust and right-wing extremism on ABC Radio

On the 76th anniver­sary of the lib­er­a­tion of the Auschwitz-Birke­nau con­cen­tra­tion camp by the allies at the end of World War Two, experts and politi­cians are warn­ing anti­semitism con­tin­ues to increase in Aus­tralia. Holo­caust denial is also spread­ing. Both form part of the nar­ra­tive used by far-right, white-suprema­cist groups, but they are also incor­po­rat­ing con­spir­a­cy think­ing about gov­ern­ment con­trol through COVID-19 mea­sures.

ECAJ Research Direc­tor, Julie Nathan points to ter­ror attacks by such groups and indi­vid­u­als in the US, Ger­many and New Zealand as a cau­tion about their poten­tial for vio­lence. She says edu­ca­tion is key, but Aus­tralia must also have effec­tive laws on anti-vil­i­fi­ca­tion, and anti-incite­ment.
