ECAJ appalled by latest Palestinian Terrorist Attack

13 December 2018

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the peak representative body of the Australian Jewish community, is saddened and angered by the news that a four-day-old baby boy, delivered in an emergency C‑section following the shooting of his mother outside Ofra, has died.

The baby boy, named Amiad Yisrael, lived for four brief, pain-filled days before succumbing to the injuries he and his mother sustained. The mother and father of baby Amiad are expected to recover physically but the torment and loss of their baby will never leave them.

We mourn the loss of another innocent life to Palestinian violence and pray that the parents, Shira and Amichai, and extended family are blessed by his memory and know no further grief.
We understand that the IDF has carried out an operation in Ramallah to apprehend members of the terrorist cell responsible for the attack. We commend the Israeli military and security services for their swift and necessary response.

The reaction of the Palestinian leadership has been telling. The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine said it was proud of the terrorists. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine called the killing of the baby a “brave and heroic” act. Hamas said it is an “expression of the spirit of resistance”.
Deliberately shedding innocent blood, and exulting in the act, have become the defining features of Palestinian “resistance”.

In violation of the most basic norms of decency, Palestinian terrorist groups openly declare that they make no distinction between Israeli soldiers and civilians. They consider all Israeli civilians to be legitimate targets for killing and maiming. It is now clear that that includes an unborn baby.
We welcome the statements of condemnation by the governments of the EU and the US among others.
