UTS institutional bias against Jews

ECAJ Head of Legal Simone Abel

“The ECAJ would like to thank the national student ombudsman for taking the time to thoroughly investigate these complaints and for looking behind the institutional smoke and mirrors.

“The NSO has found that UTS was institutionally biased against Jewish students and utterly failed to protect them, denying them procedural fairness and blaming them for what were legitimate and reasonable complaints by turning the complaint process against them.

“UTS must now examine its culture from top to bottom and purge it of the anti-Jewish bias that has underpinned every stage of its woefully poor response and the very conduct that was the subject of the complaints in the first place.

“Whatever UTS may say, it remains one of the worst campuses to be a Jewish student in Australia today. If you need evidence of that, you need only look at the victimisation of Jewish students who gathered to mark the anniversary of October 7 recently, or the hateful propaganda that spills out of Cornerstone Cafe.”

“If UTS wants to make its campus safe for Jewish students it needs to do more than apply process to their complaints. It needs to listen and it needs to take real action. Apologies ring hollow without meaningful change.”
